Strategies for prevention and control(Required)

Hold the student’s hand when out on the street or moving from one place to another within the community; both the lead tutor and, if applicable, the TA, should stand within close proximity to the student

Set clearly defined boundaries and routines as to what is appropriate and what is not in all settings

Reinforce boundaries and routines by reviewing basic road safety with the student, when going to the park, nearby shops, or any other venues

Follow a clear routine of activities in different venues and give the student plenty of warning if any changes are needed

Conduct risk assessments for the different venues you visit

Dysregulation/challenging behaviour

Strategies for prevention and control(Required)

Build a strong rapport with the student from the very first day, so that they feel that they can trust you.

Monitor the student's behaviour and emotional state; pay attention to any triggers or signs of distress

De-escalate the situation when you notice mounting anxiety or distress by quickly switching activities or giving them some alone time, among other distraction or diversion techniques

Make sure the student does not spend too much time on a single activity

Make sure the student gets adequate breaks, including movement breaks

Negotiate the possibility of engaging in different activities to give the student a measure of control

Ensure that the student has an agreed way to indicate they are feeling agitated, unhappy or overwhelmed; this will need to be discussed with the student’s parent or guardian

Give the student time out and ‘alone’ time if necessary but monitor them at all times

Ensure that the learning environment is free of sensory overload, especially auditory, and avoid sudden loud noises

Negotiate a reward system to celebrate the student’s hard work
