We believe that our team is best placed to recommend a tutor for a particular student. We meet all our tutors in person and get to know them, and take considerable time to understand the needs of each of our students. We, therefore, believe that the education consultant assigned to oversee a particular provision should therefore be responsible for proposing a tutor for a particular student, and not parents based purely on a tutor profile on a website. This approach has resulted in many satisfied clients and industry awards.
This varies depending on a few factors, including whether online or in-person, location, scheduling flexibility, frequency of sessions, and your child’s specific needs. We can usually complete this process within a week if we have an available tutor, but if we need to specifically recruit a tutor to meet your needs, this process will naturally take longer. Bright Heart makes tracking progress straightforward and transparent.
Each student has an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) with SMART academic and SEMH (social, emotional and mental health) targets. Attendance and engagement are tracked, with lesson reports provided after each session.
Lesson reports include tracking student engagement and whether academic and SEMH targets per the ILP are on track. Reports also cover learning objectives, description of the session, comments about the session, comments about the student, comments on lesson outcomes, and comments if issues with engagement or targets are flagged. ILPs are updated periodically to track progress against targets.
ILPs and lesson reports are all reviewed by the assigned education consultant, with appropriate follow-up action taken where necessary. These reports are accessible through our secure tuition management platform, TutorCruncher, allowing you to monitor your child’s progress.
Fees vary based on the tutor’s experience and qualifications, and will be clearly indicated in a tutor proposal.
In-person rates start from £68 per hour, including VAT (£56.67 ex VAT), and online rates start from £47.40 per hour, including VAT (£39.50 excluding VAT).
We also offer homeschooling discounts, depending on hours of tutoring required – please contact our client team for more information.
Online rates for international clients start from £43.80 per hour.
Our rates include the cost of tutoring and oversight provided by the education consultant assigned to oversee the tutoring provision. All our education consultants are experienced UK-qualified teachers.
Yes, the registration fee is £60 for parents, including VAT. This grants life-long family access to our tutoring services.
This fee is payable if you elect to proceed with a proposed tutor and is fully refundable if you do not wish to continue with Bright Heart following the initial refundable trial lesson.
Yes, Bright Heart Education charges VAT on all of its services. Its VAT registration number is 370137224.
The trial lesson is a 1-hour initial session to help determine if the tutor is a good fit for your child. If you decide not to continue with the tutor after this session, you won’t be charged for the first hour. If the trial exceeds 1 hour and you choose not to proceed, you will be billed for any additional time.
Yes, if the initial tutor is not a good fit, you can request an alternative. We will provide additional tutor proposals until we find a suitable match or advise if we cannot meet your specific requirements.
You can decline to continue with a tutor following a trial lesson without notice. After that, we ask that parents provide a 1-week notice period if they wish to stop tutoring. Tutors are asked to provide at least 2 weeks’ notice to stop tutoring.

Fees are charged at the rate specified in the tutor proposal. If you wish to continue after the trial lesson, Bright Heart provides an initial package covering a minimum of 4 hours of tuition. Payment for this package is required before further tuition. After this, you may purchase additional packages in blocks of 4 or more hours or choose monthly billing via direct debit for 8+ hours per month.
Our friendly client team will send your credit requests when you account balance has been used up so that you can purchase more lessons, and we are here to answer any billing questions. We will send you a monthly invoice early each month (typically by the 5th working day), showing how many lessons you had in the preceding month and the cost of those lessons. We will also send lesson reports at the same time for each lesson to help you keep track. We will also indicate if any money is owed for those lessons or if the costs have been fully covered by your lesson packages purchased.

Unused hours from a purchased lesson package (except the initial package) can be refunded upon request if they have not expired (a package is typically valid for 6 months). However, we do not typically offer refunds for unused hours within the initial package, except under limited circumstances at our discretion. After each tuition session, tutors provide lesson reports through our tuition management system, TutorCruncher. Parents can log in securely to access feedback on their child’s progress, and tutors are also available to discuss feedback if needed. Bright Heart also emails parents all lesson reports for the month early in the following month (typically by the 5th working day).
Parents or legal guardians are encouraged to provide a quiet, distraction-free space for tutoring. If tutoring occurs at home, a guardian should be present unless the student is over 18 and not considered vulnerable. Parents should also ensure that students have the necessary materials, have completed any homework, and are respectful and attentive during lessons.
Lessons cancelled less than 24 hours in advance may still be charged. If the tutor is late, they may stay longer to make up the time, or the session cost will be reduced. Please share planned holidays and notify tutors of any schedule changes with reasonable notice.
Bright Heart has in place stringent recruitment policies to ensure that it recruits tutors with the necessary professional competencies. This includes detailed screening, and interviewing, including scenario-based questions, and background checks.
As part of our safer recruitment practices, we also conduct enhanced DBS checks (see next question), reference checks, identity verification, prohibition from teaching checks (if applicable), qualification verifications, online checks and checks on the tutor’s right to work in the UK. For tutors who have lived or worked outside of the UK, we perform additional checks to verify their background, such as obtaining police clearance certificates or equivalent documentation from relevant countries.
We also meet all our tutors in person prior to them tutoring.

Our policy on DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) checks for tutors is that every tutor must hold an Enhanced DBS check with a check of the children’s barred list less than 12 months old before starting any tutoring assignment. This level of check provides details of any criminal convictions, cautions, warnings, or reprimands, including any information relevant to working with children.
We require that tutors either obtain a new Enhanced DBS certificate annually or register for the DBS Update Service, which allows us to check the status of their certificate on an ongoing basis.
Bright Heart carefully monitors the age of tutors’ DBS checks on its single central record.
Tutors are required to adhere to our safeguarding policies and notify us of any changes in their DBS status immediately. We monitor all safeguarding incidents closely and maintain open communication with tutors regarding any updates to safeguarding practices or requirements.
All tutors undertake safeguarding induction training (including Prevent) and annual third-party safeguarding refresher training through the Safeguarding Network covering Keeping Children Safe in Education, Part 1, and must pass related tests. Tutors receive periodic additional in-person safeguarding training and broadcasts.
In addition, all tutors must complete a person-centred / SEN training course produced exclusively for Bright Heart by the National Association of Special Educational Needs (Nasen), and pass a related test. Nasen also provides an annual in-person training workshop for tutors.
Tutors are also all provided with access to free continual professional development (CPD) through Bright Heart’s subscription to TES Develop.

Our tutors are selected through a rigorous process designed to ensure they meet high academic and professional standards, and are equipped to deliver compassionate, effective tuition in line with the Bright Heart Approach.
At a minimum, a Bright Heart tutor must have 12 months of relevant teaching or tutoring experience in the UK, hold a university degree or be actively studying towards a degree, and have special educational needs (SEN) experience and a passion for tutoring students with SEN. Most of our tutors have vastly more experience, with many holding teaching and / or SEN qualifications.

Tutors receive initial training on safeguarding and the Bright Heart Approach, as well as exclusive online training produced by Nasen to prepare them for meeting individual learning needs. Tutors are also offered an annual in-person training workshop held by Nasen, annual safeguarding refresher training through the Safeguarding Network, and access to CPD through TES Connect.
In addition, Bright Heart’s experienced education consultants – all qualified teachers – are on hand to support tutors with any tutoring questions, and our tutor team can support with administrative matters.
Tutors are carefully matched to students based on their qualifications, experience, and the specific needs of the student to ensure effective learning outcomes.
Tutors are self-employed, independent contractors who enter into a contract for services with Bright Heart. They are expected to deliver high-quality tuition and be fully prepared, based on a particular student’s specific needs. Tutors should be able to commit to providing students with ongoing support during an academic year to provide continuity. Should circumstances change, a tutor should give a minimum of 2 weeks’ notice before stopping tuition.

No, tutors are self-employed and independent of Bright Heart. This means you’re responsible for managing your own taxes, insurance, and self-employment obligations.
You are free to work with other agencies or clients directly, as long as they are not clients of Bright Heart or connected to Bright Heart. If working with Bright Heart clients, tutoring should be arranged through Bright Heart.
Contact the Designated Safeguarding Lead, Carol Minkoulou, or one of the Deputy DSLs, Dr. Ryan Stevenson or Dr. Rosie Ingold. Use the safeguarding incident form to report any incidents confidentially.
Do not discuss safeguarding incidents with anyone outside the designated safeguarding team. Use the proper reporting form and do not email us to maintain confidentiality.
Tutors must have an Enhanced DBS check that is less than 12 months old unless they are registered for the DBS update service. You are responsible for obtaining and maintaining your DBS check and for joining the update service if applicable.
